What Foundations Need to Consider When They Decide to Spend Down

While it takes a lot of thoughtful planning, spending down can nonetheless be an effective avenue for donors who seek to have great influence on urgent issues and to see the impact of their efforts during their lifetime. However, the hard-and-fast timelines inherent in spend down mean that funders need to revise their strategies with a particular eye to the sustainability of their initiatives (knowing the foundations won't be there to monitor them in the future) and to be even more disciplined about sticking to their plans.
