U.S. Foundation Funding for Australia

"U.S. Foundation Funding for Australia", the first report of its kind, is part of a larger project involving the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, Philanthropy Australia, and Foundation Center. A primary goal of this partnership is to improve awareness and understanding in Australia of the U.S. philanthropic sector, while also strengthening philanthropic ties between the two countries and demonstrating the value of transparency within the not-for-profit sector. In the current report, we examine the priorities of U.S. foundation funding to organizations located in Australia, as well as funding for organizations supporting causes in Australia. The quantitative analysis is based on grantmaking data from among the largest U.S. foundations. The report also presents perspectives of U.S. and Australian funders on the current role of philanthropy in Australia, specific challenges and opportunities, and what is needed to achieve greater impact.

Engaging Philanthropy in the Post-2015 Development Agenda: Lessons Learned and Ways Forward

Since its inception in July 2014, the Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy -- soon to be called the SDG Philanthropy Platform or Platform for short -- has created vital linkages between an emergent philanthropy sector from around the world, the United Nations (UN) and some governments. It is leveraging the strengths of these stakeholders to contribute to the achievement and localization of the SDGs. Several key successes can be claimed:A clear track has been created for philanthropy to engage more deeply and in a more unified manner with the UN-led SDG process through concerted advocacy, communications and awareness-raising strategies.Progress has been made towards creating a global knowledge base around philanthropy's significant role in development initiatives around the world.Credible strides have been made in developing a data repository on philanthropic giving.

Organisational Legitimacy, Capacity and Capacity Development

The European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) has undertaken a study of capacity development, with a focus on organisational change and performance enhancement. Both individual organisations and networks of organisations have been studied with the aim of identifying important relationships among endogenous change factors (e.g. ownership, commitment and managerial style), key internal organisation variables (e.g. structures, procedures, staffing and management systems), performance and sustainability outcomes, and external environmental factors (e.g. policy frameworks, resource availability, politics, stakeholders, governance regimes, etc.).To date, the ECDPM study team has conducted 16 case studies (see Appendix). Among the findings that have emerged from several of the cases is the presence of an organisation's legitimacy as a factor contributing to successful capacity and performance. To delve in more detail into the concept of legitimacy, and to identify the implications for capacity building, ECDPM commissioned a working paper on the topic. This exploratory paper reviews the relevant literature and examines: differing definitions, types and sources of legitimacy; the links between legitimacy and organisational capacity, performance and sustainability; and management strategies for building and maintaining legitimacy. It discusses a selected set of the ECDPM cases in terms of the legitimacy concept.
